The Many Faces of ComicSpace.com

Wednesday's Web Wanderings...Last week, I talked about a webcomics site I found, Webcomics Nation. That site is actually part of a larger company, The ComicSpace LLC Network. In addition to Webcomics Nation, the sites ComicSpace, OnlineComics, TalkAboutComics, Comixpedia, Modern Tales, Girlamatic, Graphic Smash, Serializer, and Graphic Novel Review are all part of this powerhouse of a company.
ComicSpace.com is a social networking site for webcomic creators and fans. Users can create a gallery to show their works, and community members can communicate by leaving comments and bulletins for other users.
OnlineComics.net is basically an online comics directory. Comics are not hosted at this site, and any comic creator can have their work listed with this site (if it meets the guidelines), not just creators affiliated with the other ComicSpace sites. This is great for creators wanting to get their work noticed, and for fans who are looking for comics in a certain genre, style, or format.
TalkAboutComics.com is a blog site for any and all discussions that are related to the world of comics. Topics range from awards to business to news about various comics, to just about anything. GraphicNovelReview.com is very similar, but focuses on reviews of graphic novels.
Comixpedia.org is a wiki for webcomics. As with most wiki sites, it is written by the community of users, and it currently has over 3,000 articles. You can search lists of webcomics and creators, and there are articles on subjects related to the world of webcomics.
ModernTales.com is an anthology site, and distinguishes itself as “the first stable example of the subscription model for professional webcomics”. Modern Tales has a bit of an “upscale” feel to it. Girlamatic.com is similar in nature, but with comics that tend to appeal more to female readers. GraphicSmash.com focuses on comics with an element of action in their stories. Serializer.net specializes in “alternative” comics. These four sites comprise the “Modern Tales Family” of sites, and were all created by Joey, and the last three were spin-offs from Modern Tales. These sites offer both free comics and a subscription program. They are different from many other sites in that they do not accept open submissions or self-publishing, but the creators must be selected by the editor.
Tuesday, I had the opportunity to do a short interview with ComicSpace CEO Joey Manley. Tomorrow, I'll be posting about Joey, the evolution of ComicSpace, and even a note about a project that will go live in a few days.
